The Power of the Collective: What Happens When Colleges Share Their Expertise?

Every college has something of value to offer, and something of value to learn.

That simple belief has been at the heart of The College Collective since it was established by The KWP Ltd and the Association of Colleges in 2021.

The idea came from a challenge familiar to many of us working in further education. We talk a lot about sharing good practice, but how often do we really share it? How often do we create the space to talk openly about what worked, what did not, and what we learnt along the way?

At the same time, colleges are full of talented people with knowledge and experience that could benefit others across the sector. Too often, when we face a challenge, we look outside the sector for answers rather than recognising the expertise that already exists within it.

The College Collective was created to do things differently.

A Sector That Helps Itself

The College Collective connects professionals from partner colleges across the UK, bringing together people from curriculum and non curriculum roles to work on real people, projects and problems.

Through peer led consultancy, one to one coaching, Action Learning Sets and webinars, colleagues can access fresh thinking and practical support from people who understand the realities of working in further education.

The exchange works both ways. Colleges receive support and expertise, while the people providing it have opportunities to develop their own confidence, leadership and professional practice.

Today, 42 colleges have participated in The College Collective, representing 25% of the sector. Since 2021, 319 AoC Associate Experts have been trained and developed, and 985 staff have engaged in targeted support.

But the numbers tell only part of the story.

Developing people by recognising the expertise they already have

One of the most powerful impacts of The College Collective has been the growth in confidence among the people who become AoC Associate Experts.

Confidence in coaching and mentoring has increased from 77% to 95%. Career planning confidence has risen from 71% to 88%, while the proportion of Experts who believe their own knowledge is valuable has increased from 77% to 94%.

That last figure is particularly significant.

The expertise already existed. The College Collective provides a structure through which people can recognise it, develop it and share it.

The impact can then extend far beyond the individual. People take new ideas back to their teams. They approach challenges differently. They develop colleagues, influence policy and become more confident leaders.

From Individual Development to College Wide Change

The stories captured in our 2025 Impact Report demonstrate how collaboration can translate into tangible change.

We have seen colleagues progress into senior leadership roles and use their experience to develop others. Shared practice has influenced approaches to English and maths, apprenticeships, staff development, marketing, digital skills and artificial intelligence.

Colleges have used connections made through the Collective to benchmark their practice, challenge established thinking and learn directly from peers facing similar challenges.

In one college, shared learning helped inform changes to GCSE resit policy. In another, collaboration contributed to improvements in apprenticeship provision. Elsewhere, insights shared between colleges are helping shape approaches to AI and digital innovation.

These are practical examples of what can happen when expertise is allowed to flow across institutional boundaries.

Collaboration With Impact

For those receiving support through The College Collective, the response has also been strong. Ninety six per cent of participants reported being satisfied or very satisfied, with one to one support achieving a Net Promoter Score of 70.

The areas of impact are broad, spanning curriculum and learning, data and systems, marketing and communications, people and culture, professional enrichment, and digital innovation and AI.

This breadth matters because collaboration should not be confined to one part of a college.

Every role, every team and every institution has knowledge that could help someone else.

More Than a Network

The College Collective has grown into more than a professional development programme or consultancy model. It is creating a different way for colleges to work together.

It is about recognising and developing the talent already within our sector. It is about being open enough to share successes and challenges. And it is about understanding that giving expertise and receiving it are equally valuable.

As one of our members put it:

“It’s more than just a consortium… it’s what you give but also what you take from it.”

As The College Collective continues to grow, our ambition is to connect more people, unlock more of the expertise that exists within further education and create more opportunities for colleges to learn from one another.

Because when colleges share what they know, everyone has the opportunity to become stronger.

Real People. Real Impact. Real Change Across the Sector.

If your college would like to be part of The College Collective, we would be pleased to hear from you.
